Eating Healthy On Campus

Sometimes it is hard to stay healthy when your parents aren't constantly reminding you to eat your veggies and providing substantial meals every day. It might not be as convenient or tasty but it is NOT impossible to eat well when you go to college. At UNCW there are plenty of healthy options, you just have to keep your eyes open for them. There are many places to eat on campus and almost, if not all, have signs where there are healthy options called "Healthy Hawks". If you ever see one of these I highly recommend trying it out. More than likely it is affordable, flavorful and, best of all, healthy. If you are worried about other things that may prevent you from eating healthy here are a few tips to help:

1. Wake up early enough to eat breakfast! This is a very important part of the day; you should eat it even if it is a yogurt and banana from the convenient store.
2. Make sure when you go to the dining halls your plate is filled with different types of food and not just pizza and fries.
3. Take full advantage of your meal swipes. If you eat 3 meals a day; it is less likely you will want to run to cookout or somewhere that may not be as good for you.
4. Make sure to mix it up do not use all your food dollars in the first couple weeks.
5. Stay hydrated. You need at least 6 cups of water per day and this keeps you more satisfied throughout your day.
6. Pack a healthy snack when you know your going to be a while studying. This prevents getting hungry afterwards and overindulging.

Hope this helps from gaining the freshman 15 or more!
